Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud bid farewell to his Supreme Court colleague, Justice Aniruddha Bose, praising him as a "stellar judge" and a classic Bengali 'Bhadrolok'. Justice Bose, who joined the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, is moving on to become the director of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal.
"Farewells are always bittersweet. Today marks yet another bittersweet moment," Chandrachud remarked at the farewell function hosted by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), wishing Justice Bose well in his future endeavors.
Chandrachud highlighted Justice Bose's significant contributions to the legal landscape, noting his impactful tenure at the apex court, the Calcutta High Court, and the Jharkhand High Court. He described Justice Bose as a gentleman with a penchant for listening and intellectual pursuits, praising his diverse interests in literature, history, and theology.
"Justice Bose was not only a stellar judge but also an outstanding lawyer," Chandrachud emphasized. He commended Justice Bose's unique background in intellectual property law, acquired during his time at a law firm before joining the bench.
Referring to Justice Bose as a "trailblazer" in modernizing the judiciary, Chandrachud lauded his advocacy for a technology-friendly judicial system and his adeptness in handling complex legal disputes.
In his address, Justice Bose expressed his view that the Supreme Court represents the essence of modern India, with judges from diverse backgrounds converging on common principles to deliver justice.
He highlighted the uniformity in the litigation profiles across India, emphasizing the shared experiences and challenges faced by litigants regardless of their geographical location.
Recalling a notable decision from Justice Bose's tenure at the Calcutta High Court, Chandrachud mentioned how he facilitated a litigant from the US to appear via video conference in a case related to medical negligence.
Chandrachud underscored Justice Bose's role in pivotal Supreme Court judgments on various public interest issues, including data privacy, electoral independence, animal rights, and affirmative action.
Justice Bose, in his remarks, noted the evolving landscape of the legal profession in India, particularly the increasing participation of women, which he believes will lead to the development of advanced gender jurisprudence in the country.
Born on April 11, 1959, Justice Bose completed his education in Kolkata before embarking on his legal career, focusing on constitutional, civil, and intellectual property matters. He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court in 2004 and later served as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court before joining the Supreme Court.
